Kamala Harris: Pledging a New Era of Partnership with Africa

Vice President Kamala Harris is on a mission to strengthen ties between the United States and Africa, and her upcoming speech from Black Star Gate in Ghana is just the beginning. On her second full day in Ghana, she'll focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and American private-sector investment in Africa, a place that has been overlooked for too long. Harris plans to tour Cape Coast Castle, where enslaved Africans were loaded onto ships bound for the Americas, and deliver remarks there.

As China and Russia vie for influence in Africa, Harris is careful to downplay the role of geopolitical rivalries during her travels. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of partnership, saying, "America will be guided not by what we can do for our African partners, but what we can do with our African partners."

At a banquet dinner hosted by Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, rubbed elbows with American celebrities, businesspeople, and civil rights leaders, including actors Idris Elba and Rosario Dawson and director Spike Lee. As the most high-profile member of President Joe Biden's administration to visit Africa, Harris's trip is a symbol of a new era of partnership between the United States and Africa.
