US Demonstrates F-15 Jets in Joint Exercise with Indian Air Force

The United States has sent four F-15E Eagles to participate in joint exercises with the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal. The move is being interpreted by some as an attempt to demonstrate to India that the F-15 is the best option available for the country's needs in the Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) category. Following India's acquisition of 36 Rafales from France, the country is searching for more MMRCA to bridge the gap between its Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and the Su-30MKI.

F-15Es on Offer, including F-15EXs

The US government has allowed Boeing to offer F-15s for sale to India, including both F-15Es and F-15EXs. The Pacific Air Command of the United States Air Force (USAF) sent the four F-15Es to participate in the joint exercises. The goal is for IAF pilots to determine whether the aircraft is compatible as an MMRCA. While India has used US-made strategic transport aircraft and helicopters, the IAF has never used US-made fighter jets before.

F-15EX vs. Rafale

The F-15EX, which has only recently been inducted into the USAF, is reportedly much larger than the Rafale and has a take-off load carrying capacity that is almost equal to that of the Su-30MKI. The F-15EX can carry up to 22 missiles, including hypersonic ones, and can counter any threat from Chinese-built hypersonic missiles. It also has an extended range due to its fuel tanks. However, several rounds of trials will be required to determine whether the F-15EX can counter China's military build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Extreme Weather Conditions and Other Factors

India's MMRCA must operate in extreme weather conditions, including temperatures of around 40-degree Celsius in the Western Sector and the sub-zero temperatures of the Himalayas. As a result, officials in India remain skeptical about making any commitments, and they will weigh all options, including the indigenous twin-engine Tejas that is currently being developed. Furthermore, any MMRCA that India procures must be able to operate in a variety of situations.

Maintaining Peace in the Indo-Pacific Region

According to a US official, both India and the US are eager to maintain a peaceful Indo-Pacific region. The joint exercises between the US and Indian air forces aim to enhance Within Visual Range and Beyond Visual Range combat deployment philosophy in a large force package. Although there is no explicit mention of China, the exercises are being held at a time when India is concerned about China's military build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the US has sent four F-15E Eagles to participate in joint exercises with the Indian Air Force, as Boeing hopes to convince India that the F-15 is the best option for the country's MMRCA requirements. Although the F-15EX has several advantages over the Rafale, officials in India remain skeptical about making any commitments and will weigh all options, including the indigenous twin-engine Tejas that is currently being developed. The joint exercises between the US and Indian air forces aim to maintain a peaceful Indo-Pacific region while enhancing combat deployment philosophy.
