China urges Germany to support its reunification with Taiwan, but German officials express concerns over military escalation in Taiwan Strait

China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, has called on Germany to support its "peaceful reunification" with Taiwan during a meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in China. Wang stated that China once supported the reunification of Germany and emphasized that Taiwan's "return to China" was an essential part of the post-World War II international order. However, Baerbock warned that any attempt from China to gain control of Taiwan would have serious repercussions for Europe, as a military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, which sees 50% of world trade every day, would be a "horror scenario for the entire world." Her comments seem to contradict what French President Emmanuel Macron said following his trip to China, urging Europe to avoid following the "American rhythm" on Taiwan. In response, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry expressed its strong approval of Baerbock's statement, thanking many high-level officials in various countries, including Germany, for their solidarity with Taiwan.

The issue of Taiwan's sovereignty has long been a contentious issue between China and Taiwan, with China claiming Taiwan as part of its territory and seeking reunification, while Taiwan considers itself a separate country with its own government, economy, and military. The international community has largely avoided taking a stance on the issue, with most countries recognizing the "One China" policy, which acknowledges that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it. However, some countries, including the United States, have maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan, causing tensions with China.

Germany's stance on Taiwan has been a point of interest, as the country has been seeking to increase its presence in the Indo-Pacific region and has expressed support for a rules-based international order. While Baerbock's comments indicate that Germany is wary of any potential military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, Macron's statement suggests that Europe may not be united in its approach to the issue. As tensions between China and Taiwan continue to simmer, it remains to be seen how the international community will navigate this sensitive topic.
