TRAI mandates AI spam filters for Indian telecoms to stop unwanted calls and messages

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new rules for telecoms like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL to curb fake calls and messages. As per the new rules, AI spam filters will be integrated into the incoming calls and SMS services of all telecoms starting May 1, 2023. The filters will detect and block pesky calls and messages related to promotions and fraud, allowing users to avoid unwanted interruptions.

Reports suggest that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already agreed to the new rules and are ready to use the AI filters. TRAI has also directed telecom operators to stop allowing promotional calls from 10-digit mobile numbers, which are majorly used by spammers and fraudsters. In addition, TRAI has asked telecom operators to implement a Call ID feature that displays the image and name of the caller on the user's screen before taking the call.

However, Jio and Airtel have opposed the Call ID feature due to privacy concerns. While the new rules are a welcome step in curbing spam calls and messages, users can also activate the DND (Do Not Disturb) service to block unwanted calls and messages. The service can be activated by sending a text message to 1909 from a BSNL number, following which users can select the categories and modes (voice calls, SMS or both) that they want to block.

The implementation of AI spam filters is expected to significantly reduce the number of unwanted calls and messages that users receive on a daily basis. With the new rules in place, telecoms are required to take proactive measures to protect users from pesky calls and messages. This move by TRAI is in line with the Indian government's efforts to promote the use of technology to improve the quality of life of citizens.
