India is rapidly moving forward in the direction of semiconductor manufacturing. All the countries of the world are appreciating it. But China is probably not liking this. The latest example of this is that China has banned the export of Gallium-Germanium, two elements that play an important role in making semiconductors. However, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has made a big claim regarding this. He has said that this ban imposed by China will have no effect on India.
whole world with new india
In an exclusive conversation with Aaj Tak's associate channel Business Today, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the whole world is partnering with New India as it seeks to build a more flexible supply chain. He said that India will not be affected by China's decision to control the export of gallium and germanium. He said that semiconductor and electronics manufacturing is very important in view of India's goal of becoming a global supply chain partner for the country and the world. It was assured that there would be no misuse of the supply.
Mention of partnership between India and America
Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the Indo-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) ensures that there is no such control or misuse on the supply chain. This also includes materials. He said that India-US partnership under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as India's alliance with like-minded countries will define the future of IT and global supply chain. Significantly, US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced iCET in May 2022 last year.
China has recently taken this decision
China has recently announced a ban on the export of Gallium-Germanium, two elements considered important for the production of semiconductors. This has caused a major blow to the global market, as China is a major producer of rare minerals. Even though China has taken this step to answer the western countries, but it was also expected to affect the ongoing efforts towards chip manufacturing in India. Regarding which Union Minister Rajiv Chandrasekhar has made it clear that this ban will not affect India.
What are gallium and germanium after all?
Gallium and germanium are naturally occurring metals, but they are produced as co-products of other metals in refineries. Gallium is mainly used in making semiconductors, integrated circuits and LEDs. Also, they are used in electronic circuits, thermometers, barometer sensors, and pharmaceuticals. While germanium is usually made as a by-product of zinc and sulfide ores, it is used in optical fibers, satellites, solar cells, cameras, microscope lenses, and infrared night vision systems.
Beijing says that keeping in mind its national security, China has decided to ban the export of these two metals. Now, to take these two metals out of China, exporters will have to apply for a license and give full details of foreign buyers and deals with them to the Chinese government.
