India is making significant strides in the green hydrogen sector, aiming to become a major exporter of this clean energy source. The country recently hosted talks with the European Union (EU) regarding a potential deal to supply 10 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen. In return, EU businesses would invest in Indian projects and have the opportunity to claim carbon credits. This meeting, which took place in New Delhi, brought together officials from EU governments and Indian renewable companies to discuss collaboration in the hydrogen sector.
The global shift towards hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels is driven by the need to address climate change and promote sustainable energy solutions. Recognizing this, India has been actively working towards becoming a key player in the green hydrogen market. Last year, the Indian government approved a 174.9 billion rupees ($2.13 billion) incentive plan to support its ambitions in the sector. This move demonstrated India's commitment to developing a robust green hydrogen industry and encouraging investments in renewable energy.
To further promote the growth of the green hydrogen sector, the Indian government is hosting the International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH-2023) in New Delhi. The conference, taking place from 5-7 July 2023, aims to bring together global leaders in scientific research, policy-making, academia, and industry. Participants will engage in discussions on advancements and emerging technologies in the green hydrogen sector, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
The conference is organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). These collaborative efforts demonstrate the government's commitment to building a sustainable ecosystem in the green hydrogen sector, creating opportunities for innovation, and driving the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
India's commitment to green hydrogen is evident through the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission earlier this year. With an allocated budget of ₹19,700 crore, this mission aims to achieve a production capacity of five million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen by 2030. By transitioning the economy to low carbon intensity and reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports, India seeks to accelerate the country's sustainable development and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
The discussions with the EU and the upcoming International Conference on Green Hydrogen demonstrate India's determination to position itself as a global leader in the green hydrogen sector. By forging international partnerships, leveraging renewable energy resources, and investing in cutting-edge technologies, India is poised to play a vital role in the global energy transition towards a sustainable and greener future.
