In some spicy news from the United Nations Security Council, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, expressed her doubts about Russia's presidency in the Security Council this week. In fact, she went as far as to say that Russia "should not be" a permanent member of the council because of its actions in Ukraine. Unfortunately, the UN charter does not allow for a change in permanent membership. The ambassador is attending a democracy summit in Costa Rica, and she expects Moscow to behave professionally while it holds the presidency, although she remains skeptical. She even accused Russia of advancing its disinformation campaign against Ukraine and the US.
As if that weren't enough, the US envoy also condemned Moscow's "war crimes and human rights violations" in Ukraine, which have been marked by the anniversary of killings in Bucha. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that "the battle for the foundation of the free world is taking place on Ukrainian land," and that "Russian evil will fall, right here in Ukraine and will not be able to rise again."
On a different note, Linda Thomas-Greenfield touched upon the conflict between China and Taiwan, saying that the US respects the "One-China" policy but has a "strong partnership" with Taipei. This issue is a contentious one, and the US envoy's statement is sure to stir up some feelings.
