In a significant development, it has been disclosed that the United States is highly interested in collaborating with India regarding the transfer of nuclear energy technology. During a press conference held at the conclusion of a three-day meeting, Union Power Secretary Alok Kumar informed reporters that the US delegation, as part of the G20 group, expressed support for technology transfer in the nuclear energy sector. While details are yet to be worked out, Kumar hinted that the US is enthusiastic about collaborating with India, particularly in the field of nuclear technology. Furthermore, discussions on small modular reactors and their potential were held, with India expressing its interest in acquiring the technology to establish smaller nuclear power plants. The Department of Atomic Energy scientists are already working on developing indigenous small modular reactor technology. The Power Ministry, leading negotiations on the energy transition working group within the G20, highlighted a broad consensus on India's suggestions for the group's agenda. Although differences exist regarding the specific approach, remote deliberations will continue leading up to the next meeting in Goa in July. India successfully advocated for prioritizing future fuels such as green hydrogen and biofuels within the G20. The nomenclature for green hydrogen, derived from nuclear energy, is yet to be decided. The inclusion of biofuels in the list of future fuels was agreed upon, with the condition that it doesn't compromise food security. Kumar emphasized that biofuels, created from waste and residues, have the potential to boost farmer incomes and generate employment opportunities.
