According to the American news website Politico, Biden also said that in order to become a member, Ukraine will also have to accept all the conditions that other countries accept. The United States will not lower any membership standards for Ukraine. US President Joe Biden said- We will not make any special arrangement to get Ukraine's NATO membership. Ukraine should not rely on us.
Biden had said earlier – we will remove all the challenges
These statements of Biden regarding Ukraine's NATO membership have come then. When a few days ago he said that America will remove all the major challenges coming in Ukraine becoming a NATO member. Biden was referring to the Membership Action Plan, which has to be accepted by every country that joins NATO.
Under this plan, the country joining NATO has to bring changes in its military and democratic system. Its process is very long. For example, Macedonia started the MAP process in 1999. After this, Macedonia was able to become a member of NATO in 2020.
All eyes on NATO summit
In July, a NATO summit is going to be held in Lithuania, in which important decisions can be taken regarding Stoltenberg's tenure, Ukraine war and NATO solidarity. According to an American official, during this summit, efforts will be made to bring all countries together on the proposal to make Ukraine a NATO member. Recently NATO Chief Stoltenberg had said that Ukraine has benefited a lot in the war due to the help being received from NATO countries. Through the summit, we will further strengthen political relations with Ukraine.
NATO countries have not yet been able to fulfill the promise made in Bucharest
In 2008, the NATO summit was held in Bucharest. During this, it was agreed to include Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union till the end of 1991, in NATO. All NATO member countries had said that Ukraine would be included in the NATO alliance. However, NATO leaders have so far refrained from taking any steps in this direction. The biggest reason behind not including Ukraine in NATO is Article-5 of NATO Charter. According to this, any kind of attack on allied countries is considered as an attack against all NATO countries, due to which all NATO countries have to unite to fight that outside country. In such a situation, if Ukraine becomes a NATO member, then all member states will have to fight a war with Russia.
"Know how NATO is the reason for the Russia-Ukraine conflict
- After the break-up of the Soviet Union into 15 parts in 1991, NATO expanded rapidly, especially in Europe and among countries that were part of the Soviet Union.
- In 2004, three countries that were part of the Soviet Union – Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania – joined NATO in 2004, all three countries bordering Russia.
- European countries such as Poland (1999), Romania (2004) and Bulgaria (2004) have also become NATO members. All these countries are around Russia. Only Ukraine falls between them and Russia.
- Ukraine has been trying to join NATO for many years. It is because of his recent effort that Russia has attacked Ukraine.
- Ukraine has more than 2200 km long border with Russia. Russia believes that if Ukraine joins NATO, then NATO forces will reach the Russian border on the pretext of Ukraine.
- If Ukraine joins NATO, the distance of Russia's capital Moscow from western countries will be only 640 kilometers. Now this distance is about 1600 kms. Russia wants Ukraine to guarantee that it will never join NATO.
